How it is weighted, and why that matters

A certifying exam is not an even spread across a trade. Red Seal publishes how many questions fall under each major work activity, and most practice material ignores it, so you end up over-studying a small part of the exam and under-studying a large one. This bank matches the published split exactly.

Major work activityQuestions hereShare of the exam
A. Performs common occupational skills2818.7%
B. Performs rigging, hoisting/lifting and moving1912.7%
C. Services mechanical power transmission components and systems3523.3%
D. Services material handling / process systems2718%
E. Services fluid power systems2315.3%
F. Performs preventative and predictive maintenance, commissioning and decommissioning1812%

For context on the size: the real exam is 135 questions. This bank is 150, which is 1.11 times as many, so you get more practice per activity rather than a one-for-one imitation of the paper.

The mix of question types

Red Seal also publishes the share of questions at each cognitive level. Straight recall is a small minority of a real exam, which is why banks made entirely of definition questions leave people unprepared.

Sample 1 · Activity A

Which step verifies a zero-energy state after locks are applied?

  1. Try-out test. — correct
  2. Tag review.
  3. Permit sign-off.
  4. Group lock box.

Applying locks and tags only isolates the energy. The zero-energy state is confirmed by the try-out: attempt to start the equipment at the normal controls, confirm it does not run, then return the controls to off. Stored energy in springs, accumulators, capacitors and raised loads must also be released or restrained before work begins.

Sample 2 · Activity A

A machine restarts while a millwright is inside the guard. What is the cause?

  1. Tag applied without lock. — correct
  2. Lock applied to guard.
  3. Tag signed by two trades.
  4. Lock rated for outdoors.

A tag is an information device only. It warns but it does not physically prevent operation of the isolating device. A lock physically holds the disconnect open, and each worker exposed applies their own lock. Tag-only isolation is the classic cause of an unexpected restart.

Sample 3 · Activity B

What does the working load limit marked on a sling represent?

  1. Breaking strength.
  2. Proof test load.
  3. Maximum service load. — correct
  4. Shock load rating.

The working load limit is the greatest load the sling may carry in ordinary service, set by the manufacturer with the design factor already applied. Breaking strength is where it fails, and the proof test is a one-time overload check during manufacture. Neither is a rating for use.

Sample 4 · Activity C

In bearing number 6205, what does the last pair of digits give?

  1. Width in mm.
  2. Load rating.
  3. Series code.
  4. Bore in mm. — correct

For bore codes 04 and above the last two digits are multiplied by five to give the bore in millimetres, so 05 is a 25 millimetre bore. The 62 ahead of it is the dimension series. Codes 00 to 03 are the exceptions and mean 10, 12, 15 and 17 millimetres.

Sample 5 · Activity C

Which ring of a bearing gets the interference fit on a rotating shaft?

  1. Outer ring.
  2. Both rings.
  3. Neither ring.
  4. Inner ring. — correct

The ring that turns relative to the load direction is the one that must be tight, so on a rotating shaft with a stationary load the inner ring is an interference fit and the outer ring is a clearance fit in the housing. Getting this backwards lets the tight ring creep and wear the seat.

Sample 6 · Activity D

What is done before entering the working envelope of an industrial robot?

  1. Reduce program speed.
  2. Switch to teach mode.
  3. Lock out and verify. — correct
  4. Announce over radio.

A robot can move on a stored program at any time and its reach is not obvious from inside the cell. The cell is locked out and the zero-energy state verified before entry, including stored pneumatic and hydraulic energy and any counterbalance that could drop an arm.

Sample 7 · Activity D

Which reference is restored after replacing a robot axis servo motor?

  1. Cycle counter.
  2. Payload setting.
  3. Encoder home position. — correct
  4. Cell light curtain.

The controller tracks each axis position from its encoder against a stored home reference. Replacing the motor breaks that relationship, so the axis must be mastered or homed to its calibration marks before the robot is allowed to run a program.

Sample 8 · Activity E

What creates pressure in a hydraulic system?

  1. Pump displacement.
  2. Resistance to flow. — correct
  3. Reservoir head.
  4. Fluid viscosity.

A pump produces flow, not pressure. Pressure appears only when that flow meets resistance, whether a load on a cylinder, a restriction, or a closed valve. A pump discharging to an open tank develops almost no pressure no matter how large it is.

Sample 9 · Activity E

A cylinder has a 50 cm² piston at 10 000 kPa. What force is developed?

  1. 5 kN
  2. 50 kN — correct
  3. 200 kN
  4. 500 kN

Force equals pressure times area. Converting units, 10 000 kilopascals is 10 000 kilonewtons per square metre, and 50 square centimetres is 0.005 square metres. Multiplying gives 50 kilonewtons. Working in consistent units is where most of these questions are lost.

Sample 10 · Activity F

Which vibration frequency points to rotor imbalance?

  1. Half running speed.
  2. Twice running speed.
  3. One times running speed. — correct
  4. Blade pass frequency.

A heavy spot passes the sensor once per revolution, so imbalance shows as a dominant peak at one times running speed, mostly radial and with a steady phase reading. It is the first thing checked because it is both the most common fault and the easiest to correct.

Where the exam facts on this page come from

The weighting table above is not our estimate. It is the breakdown the Red Seal program publishes for this trade, and whether the trade requires a certifying examination at all is set in the regulation, not by convention. Both are linked here so you can check them rather than take our word for it.
