## What is a certificate of qualification exam?

In Ontario a certificate of qualification, usually shortened to C of Q, is the credential that says you have met the standard for your trade. For most trades you earn it by completing an apprenticeship and then passing a certifying examination set for that trade. Of the trades on this site, **82 carry a certifying examination requirement** written into the regulation itself.

The exam is multiple choice. It is not a test of memorised definitions: the published breakdowns put straight recall at a small minority of the paper, with most questions asking you to apply a procedure or reason through a situation. That is the single most common reason people who studied hard still fail, because they studied a glossary rather than the work.

Whether a trade requires an exam at all is set by [O. Reg. 876/21](https://www.ontario.ca/laws/regulation/210876), not by custom, and this site lists it per trade. [Check the record for your trade](https://ontariocertificationregistry.ca/trades/) before assuming.

## C of Q and Red Seal are not the same exam

People use the terms interchangeably and they are not. The certificate of qualification is Ontario's own credential. The [Red Seal](https://www.red-seal.ca/eng/welcome.shtml) is an interprovincial endorsement that lets you work in the trade across Canada without recertifying, and it is earned by passing the interprovincial examination.

For many trades the certifying exam and the Red Seal exam are the same paper, so passing once gets you both. For trades outside the Red Seal program, there is no interprovincial exam at all. **46 of the trades on this site have a published Red Seal exam breakdown**, which is the data these practice exams are weighted against.

## How these are built

- **Weighted to the published breakdown.** Red Seal publishes how many questions fall under each major work activity. Most practice material ignores that and spreads questions evenly, which means over-studying a small part of the exam. Each bank here matches the published split exactly, and the split is printed on the product page so you can check it.
- **Every answer cites its source.** Not just the correct letter, but the reasoning and the sub-task, rule or regulation section it comes from. If an answer looks wrong you can go and check it.
- **Original questions.** Written against the published occupational standard. Nothing is reproduced from a real exam, and anyone claiming to sell you real exam questions is either mistaken or lying.
- **Free samples before you pay.** Every product page shows real questions from the bank with answers, spread across the activities in the same proportion as the exam.
- **A PDF, not a subscription.** One payment, no login, no expiry, and you can print it.

## The reference material stays free

The practice exams are the only thing on this site that costs money. Every certification record, every requirement, every regulation citation and the whole safety training reference are free, and they will stay that way.

- [The compulsory trades, where certification is legally required to work](https://ontariocertificationregistry.ca/trades/compulsory/)
- [TSSA fuel industry certificates, gas technician G.1 to G.3 and more](https://ontariocertificationregistry.ca/certificates/)
- [Which Ontario safety tickets actually expire](https://ontariocertificationregistry.ca/safety-training/)
- [Skilled Trades Ontario, to book the real exam](https://www.skilledtradesontario.ca/)Practice material is not affiliated with Skilled Trades Ontario or the Red Seal program, and passing a practice exam does not guarantee passing a certifying examination.
